The person behind the project - Sally Hurst

I graduated from a double degree with a Bachelor of Arts (majoring in Egyptian Archaeology) and a Bachelor of Science (Palaeobiology) from Macquarie University, Sydney, in 2020. I hated the thought of choosing just one of my passions, so in 2021, I created the Found a Fossil project to combine my two fields for my Masters of Research thesis.

I’m super passionate about science communication and community engagement, this love fostered by my work at the National Dinosaur Museum in Canberra and the Australian Museum in Sydney.

My other volunteering roles with the National Indigenous Science Education Program, Curious Minds Mentoring Program, the Harding Miller Education Foundation, and the Widening Participation program at Macquarie University have helped me to become an advocate for equal education and resources. Coming from a small rural town and farm myself, with little to no role models in STEM, I hope to be a role model for young girls and women wanting to go into these fields.

Through my scuba diving and freediving activities, I’ve also become a passionate advocate for the oceans and for the protection of its wildlife.
